Serrai

Town and department in Macedonia region, northern Greece; area (department) 3,987 sq km/1,539 sq mi; population (2001) 54,300 (town). It is the centre of a cotton-growing area, and has weaving and food industries. As the ancient Seris, it existed before 330 BC. It was occupied by the Turks between 1368 and 1912 and by the Bulgarians between 1913 and 1918.
