Serrano y Dominguez, Francisco, Duque de la Torre (1810–1885)

Spanish marshal and statesman. He achieved prominence whilst fighting the Carlists (1834–39). He supported Leopoldo O'Donnell 1854–66, accepting from him the captain-generalship of Cuba (1859–62), and fighting on his side during the Madrid insurrections of 1866. Having assisted in securing the humiliation of Queen Isabella in 1868, he acted as regent until the accession of King Amadeus in 1870. Serrano y Dominguez was born on the island of Léon, Cadiz, Spain.
