Service, John Stewart

Service, John Stewart (1909–1999)

US foreign service officer. Service was raised by his missionary parents in China, where he worked for the US foreign service, 1933–45. He was dismissed for passing documents to the leftist journal Amerasia (1945) and was late reinstated by the US Supreme Court. From 1962 he taught at the University of California, Berkeley.
