Sétif

Department in northeast Algeria; area 18,116 sq km/6,995 sq mi; population (1994 est) 1,222,000. The department extends south from the Mediterranean to the inland basins on the other side of the Tell Atlas. The capital is Sétif.

Sétif

City and capital of the department of Sétif in northeast Algeria; population (1998 est) 235,300. Situated at 1,096 m/3,596 ft on a fertile plateau, it lies south of the Babor Range in the High Plateaux. It is a market town with good communications by road and rail. Cereals and livestock are important in the area and industries include flour milling, woodworking, carpet manufacture, and nearby zinc mining, but the once-important working of phosphate deposits is now on a much reduced scale.

Sétif was founded on the site of the Roman colony of Sitifis 130 km/81 mi southwest of Constantine. A Roman necropolis was discovered near the centre of the town in 1959. The city also has a notable mosque. The University of Sétif was founded here in 1978. The French established a garrison here in 1838.
