Seward

City in southern Alaska, 120 km/75 mi southeast of Anchorage, on the Kenai Peninsula at the head of Resurrection Bay, an arm of the Gulf of Alaska; population (1990) 2,700. It is a rail and highway terminus, and a key distribution centre for the Alaskan interior. Its harbour is ice-free all year.Timber, fish, and oil are the region's major products.

Russians explored the area and built a shipyard here in the late 18th century. Most of the first settlers, however, came after 1902 to build the Alaska Railroad, which extends northwards. Forests in the area are well known for hunting, and Kenai Fjords National Park is to the west.

It is the seat of Concordia College (1894).
