Seward, William Henry

Seward, William Henry (1801-1872)

US public official. A leader of the Republican party, he was appointed secretary of state by President Lincoln 1860. Although seriously wounded in the 1865 assassination of Lincoln, Seward continued to serve as secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson to 1868, purchasing Alaska for the USA from Russia for $7.2 million 1867.

Seward was born in Florida, New York, educated at Union College, and became a lawyer 1822. He was elected to the New York state senate 1830 and served as governor 1838-42 and US senator 1849-61.
