Sextus Pompeius (c. 67–35 BC)

Roman soldier. He was the younger son of the military leader Pompey and his third wife, Mucia. Following Julius Caesar's murder 44 BC, he occupied Sicily and opposed Octavian (Augustus), Mark Antony, and Lepidus.

Together with his elder brother Gnaeus, Sextus was defeated by Caesar at Munda 45 BC, but escaped. After the formation of the Second Triumvirate he was proscribed, but basing himself at Marseille built up a powerful fleet, occupied Sicily, and dominated the western Mediterranean. After negotiating a temporary settlement with the Second Triumvirate, he was finally defeated at Mylae and Naulochus. He escaped with a few ships, but was killed in Asia Minor.
