Propertius, Sextus (c. 47-15 BC)

Roman elegiac poet. A member of the literary circle of Maecenas, he is best known for his highly personal love poems addressed to his mistress ‘Cynthia’.

Born at Assisi, his patrimony was confiscated after the battle of Philippi 42 BC, but he received a good education and afterwards settled in Rome. His extant poems consist of four books of about 4,000 lines of verse. Although the poems are mostly concerned with Cynthia, the fourth book deals with Roman legend and history.
