Seymour, Horatio

Seymour, Horatio (1810–1886)

US governor. Seymour served in the New York Assembly in the 1840s and gained a reputation for compromise and moderation. As New York governor, 1853–55, he improved the prison system and opposed prohibition. Elected to a second term, he provided the Union army with soldiers and financing despite having been opposed to Lincoln and the war in the past.
