Shaker Heights

City in northeastern Ohio, 13 km/8 mi east of Cleveland; population (1990) 30,800. It is an affluent commuter suburb, with expensive homes and estates, scenic parks, and lakes. The Shaker religious community of North Union was established here about 1820; a museum details its history.

After the Shaker community was disbanded in 1889, the site was subsequently sold to commercial developers who built a residential community. Since 1920 a rapid transit railway system has linked Shaker Heights to central Cleveland.
