Shakhty

City in Rostov oblast (region) of the southwestern Russian Federation, in the Donets Basin 80 km/50 mi northeast of Rostov-na-Donu; population (1996 est) 229,000. Deep-mined coal (anthracite) is extracted here, iron and steel are produced, and the city is a centre of electricity generation for the eastern Donbas industrial region. Shakhty was founded as a coalmining settlement in 1839.
