Shaler, Nathaniel

Shaler, Nathaniel (Southgate) (1841–1906)

US geologist and geographer. After studying at Harvard, Southgate settled there as a professor in 1868. In 1884 he went to head the Atlantic Coast Division of the US Geological Survey, returning to Harvard in1891 as dean of the Lawrence Scientific School. He was a popular teacher, and a prolific writer , his magazine articles and books including A First Book in Geology (1884).
