Hooverville

Colloquial term for any shantytown built by the unemployed and destitute in the USA during the Depression 1929–40, named after US president Herbert Hoover whose policies were blamed for the plight of millions. He also lent his name to ‘Hoover blankets’ (newspapers) and ‘Hoover flags’ (turned-out, empty pockets).
