Sharapova, Maria Yuryevna (1987– )

Russian tennis player, who became the first Russian to win Wimbledon when she defeated Serena Williams in the final in 2004. She was also the lowest seeded player to win the tournament and the third youngest in history. Famous for her glamorous appearance as well as her tennis skills, she dominates opponents with her powerful groundstrokes and speed around the court. She won the US Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008.

Sharapova was born in Russia, and her family moved to Florida, USA, when she was seven to enable her tennis career to develop fully. She made her professional debut in 2001, aged 14. In August 2005 she was ranked number one in the world for the first time.
