Sharon

Town in Mercer County, northwest Pennsylvania; population (1990) 17,500. It is situated on the Shenango River, 14 mi/23 km northeast of Youngstown, Ohio, and 60 mi/97 km north-northwest of Pittsburgh. Industries include steel products and electronics. A campus of Pennsylvania State University is in the town.

Sharon was settled in 1802 and became a center of the steel industry. The Sharon Furnace, built after the completion of the Lake Erie Extension of the Pennsylvania Canal in 1844, spurred the growth of the steel industry. The Shenango Dam and Reservoir are to the northeast.
