Sharpsburg

Sharpsburg

Town in northwest Maryland, on Antietam Creek, 21 km/13 mi south of Hagerstown; population (1990) 700. It is a trade centre for an agricultural area.

The Antietnam Civil War battlefield is nearby, to the southeast; the battle (17 September 1862) is often referred to as the Battle of Sharpsburg.
