Shawinigan

Shawinigan

City in southern Québec, Canada, 28 km/17 mi northwest of Trois-Rivières, on the St-Maurice River; population (1991) 19,900. Its powerful falls provide hydroelectricity for Montréal as well as for local industry, which includes the manufacture of chemicals, abrasives, aluminium, pulp and paper, textiles, clothing, and plastics.

A science and engineering college (1943) and the Séminaire Sainte-Marie (1947) are here. Largely residential Shawinigan-Sud (population (1991) 11,600) is 5 km/3 mi to the south, and Grand-Mère is 7 km/4 mi to the northeast.
