Shawn, Ted

Shawn, Ted (1891–1972)

US dancer, choreographer, and dance festival administrator. With his wife, Ruth St Denis, Shawn founded the Denishawn School of Dancing and the Denishawn Dancers. Until 1932, when they were separated, they were the leading figures of American modern dance. In 1933–40, Shawn set up a school for male dancers, and after World War II he established the internationally recognized Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. He wrote several books on dance, including Dance We Must (1940).
