Shawnee

City and administrative headquarters of Pottawatomie County, central Oklahoma, on the North Canadian River, 56 km/35 mi southeast of Oklahoma City; population (1990) 26,000. It processes and distributes grain, dairy products, livestock, oil, and natural gas. Among diversified manufactures are aircraft parts, electronic equipment, and clothing.

A land-rush city, it was settled in former Indian Territory and incorporated in 1894. It boomed after the discovery of oil in 1926. It is the seat of Oklahoma Baptist University (1906) and St. Gregory's College (1875).
