Shelby County

County in extreme southwestern Tennessee, bounded to the south by Mississippi and to the west by the Mississippi River and Arkansas; area 1,999 sq km/772 sq mi; population (1990) 826,300. It is a cotton, beef, and dairy cattle producing area increasingly dominated by its capital, Memphis, a major commercial and manufacturing centre.

The county is drained by the Wolf and Loosahatchie rivers.
