Shelbyville

City and administrative headquarters of Shelby County, central Indiana, 40 km/25 mi southeast of Indianapolis; population (1990) 15,300. In an area that raises corn and livestock and has many dairy farms, it is a trade, processing, and distribution centre. Products include electrical and heating equipment, furniture, radio and television parts, fibreglass, plastics, and clothing.

It is called the ‘Pencil City’ after its chief product. It also produces clothing, plastics, and lorry transmissions; handles local grain, livestock, and poultry; and is a centre for breeding and training Tennessee walking horses.
