Shelley, Howard (1950– )

English pianist and conductor. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London, with Harold Craxton, Lamar Crowson, and Ilona Kabos. He made his Wigmore Hall debut in 1971. He subsequently performed widely, playing Mozart (concertos conducted from the keyboard) and the Romantic repertory; he gave the first complete series of Rakhmaninov piano music, in London (1983). He played piano duets with wife, Hilary Macnamara, and gave further recitals with Jane Manning (soprano) and Malcolm Messiter (oboe). He made his conducting debut with the London Symphony Orchestra, in 1985; he was principal guest conductor of the London Mozart Players, in 1992.
