Shelton

City and coterminous township in southwestern Connecticut, on the Housatonic River opposite Derby, 16 km/10 mi northeast of Bridgeport; population (1990) 35,400. It manufactures foam rubber and metal products and electronic equipment.

Settled in the 1690s, it developed industrially after 1870, when the Derby Dam was completed.
