Shema

In Judaism, prayer from the Torah that affirms Jewish belief in the one God, and the special relationship of the Jews with God. It plays an important part in most services and worship, and is recited by Orthodox men every morning and evening.

The Shema is taken from Deuteronomy 6:4–9 and 11:13–21, followed by Numbers 15:37–41. It begins with the Hebrew for ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One’, and goes on to emphasize the importance of loving God completely, obeying the commandments and teaching them to one's children, and keeping God to the forefront of the mind.
