Shenandoah County

County in northern Virginia that occupies much of the northern Shenandoah Valley, bounded to the north and northwest by West Virginia and to the east and southeast by Massanutten Mountain; area 1,326 sq km/512 sq mi; population (1990) 31,600. Its capital is Woodstock. There is diversified agriculture, quarrying, and livestock raising. Resorts cater for tourists drawn by the scenery, limestone caverns, and the George Washington National Forest.

Strasburg and Woodstock are market centres. Fishers Hill and New Market are Civil War sites.
