Shepard, E(rnest) H(oward) (1879-1976)

English illustrator and cartoonist. He worked for Punch, but is best remembered for his illustrations for children's classics, including A A Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows (1908).

Shepard was born in London, and educated at Heatherley's and the Royal Academy schools. During the First World War he was commissioned with the Royal Artillery and awarded the MC. He was elected to the Punch Table in 1921.
