Shepard, Thomas

Shepard, Thomas (1605–1649)

English Protestant clergyman. Shepherd was ordained in 1627 but was silenced for nonconformity. He emigrated to the USA in 1635 where he espoused a stern Calvinist doctrine. A promoter of education, Shephard was said to have established the first scholarships for needy students in America.
