Shepherd, Arthur

Shepherd, Arthur (1880–1958)

US composer and conductor. After a period of teaching at Salt Lake City, he was a professor at the New England Conservatory, Boston (1908–17). In 1917 he joined the army. From 1920 to 1926 he was assistant conductor of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, and from 1927 to 1950 he taught at the Western Reserve University.

Works

two symphonies including Horizons, Choreographic Suite for orchestra (1927); fantasy for piano and orchestra; violin concerto; three string quartets (1935, 1936, 1944); Triptych (from Tagore's Gitanjali) for voice and string quartet; violin and piano sonata; two piano sonatas and pieces; songs.
