Shepherdstown

Town in northeastern West Virginia, overlooking the Potomac River, 19 km/12 mi southwest of Hagerstown, Maryland, and 16 km/10 mi northwest of Harpers Ferry; population (1990) 1,300.

Settled by Pennsylvania Germans before 1730, it is one of West Virginia's oldest communities. President George Washington considered locating the nation's capital here. In 1787 the US engineer and inventor James Rumsey (1743–1792) successfully ran one of the earliest steamboats on the river. It is the seat of Shepherd College (1871).
