Sher, Antony (1949– )

South African-born actor. A versatile performer in contemporary and classic drama, his roles include Richard III (1984), Shylock in The Merchant of Venice (1987), the title role in Peter Flannery's Singer (1989), Mikhail Astrov in Uncle Vanya (1992), Tamburlaine in Marlowe's tragedy (1992), and Stanley (1996), for which he won the 1997 Olivier Award for Best Actor. For television, he played Howard Kirk in Malcolm Bradbury's The History Man (1981). Films include Mrs Brown (1997).

Other stage performances include The Revenger's Tragedy, Tartuffe, Cyrano de Bergerac, and Titus Andronicus (all 1995). Other films include Mark Gertler and The Young Poisoner's Handbook (both 1995), and Alive and Kicking (1996).
