Sheridan

City and administrative headquarters of Sheridan County, north-central Wyoming, at the junction of Big Goose and Little Goose creeks, 21 km/13 mi south of the Montana border; population (1990) 14,000. It is the headquarters of the Bighorn National Forest. Industries include ranching, market gardening, flour and timber milling, and the processing and shipping of oil and coal.

History

The area saw bloody battles between Europeans and the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho from the late 1860s to the late 1870s. After the Indian Wars ended, Sheridan was founded (1882) and became the centre of a cattle ranching area. The community's growth was hastened by the discovery of coal in 1890 and the arrival of the railway in 1892.
