Sherman, Roger (1721–1793)

American public official. He was one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the Articles of Confederation in 1781, and the US Constitution in 1788. A supporter of American independence, he was a member of the Continental Congress 1774–81 and 1783–84. At the Constitutional Convention in 1787, he introduced the ‘Connecticut Compromise’, providing for a bicameral federal legislature.

Sherman served in the US House of Representatives 1789–91 and the US Senate 1791–93.

Born in Newton, Massachusetts, Sherman moved to Connecticut in 1743. He later studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1754. After service in Connecticut's provincial legislature, he became superior court judge 1766–85.
