Minton, Sherman (1890–1965)

US Supreme Court justice. As a US senator (Democrat, Indiana; 1935), he promoted New Deal legislation and rose to assistant majority whip. He became a judge on the US Circuit Court of Appeals (1941–49) until President Harry Truman named him to the Supreme Court (1949–56). Minton was born near Georgetown, Indiana.
