Sherwood, Robert Emmet

Sherwood, Robert Emmet (1896-1955)

US dramatist. His plays include The Petrified Forest 1935, the melodrama Idiot's Delight 1936, Abe Lincoln in Illinois 1938, and There Shall Be No Night 1940. For each of the last three he received a Pulitzer Prize.

A member of the Algonquin Round Table, Sherwood worked as a magazine editor during the 1920s. Later he became Franklin Roosevelt's speechwriter and adviser and held various political offices. After World War II he produced little important theatrical material except for the Academy Award-winning film The Best Years of Our Lives 1946.
