Life-sized terracotta soldiers form an army of figures in the 3rd-century BC tomb of the emperor Shi Huangdi. As the first ruler of China to call himself emperor, Shi Huangdi was buried surrounded by signs of his wealth and power. Excavations at Xi'an, China, in the 1980s revealed the huge tomb.

The Terracotta Army at Xi'an, China. These are full-scale pottery models of some seven thousand warriors, the army of emperor Shi Huangdi who ruled in the 3rd century BC. The collection is considered by many to be the eighth wonder of the world.

Emperor of China. He succeeded to the throne of the state of Qin 246 BC and had reunited China as an empire by 228 BC. He burned almost all existing books in 213 to destroy ties with the past; rebuilt the Great Wall of China; and was buried in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, in a tomb complex guarded by 10,000 life-size terracotta warriors (excavated in the 1980s).

He had so overextended his power that the dynasty and the empire collapsed with the death of his weak successor in 207.
