Shikarpur

Town in Sindh province in southern Pakistan, 29 km/18 mi west of the Indus River; population (2001 est) 144,000. Founded in 1617, it stands on the old trade route through the Bolan Pass to Afghanistan and Central Asia, and has a large covered market where silk, indigo, grains, and spices are sold. Industries include brass, metal goods, carpets, and cotton textiles. The flat alluvial soils near the city are agriculturally very productive, with crops of rice, wheat, sugar cane, and cotton.

The city is the home of a government college, affiliated to the University of Sindh. It is linked by road and rail to Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Larkana.
