Shillong

Capital of Meghalaya state, northeast India; population (2001) 132,900. Situated 1,593 m/5,230 ft above sea-level in the Khasi Hills, it trades in rice, cotton, and fruit, and is an important military base. Formerly the capital of Assam, it was a popular hill station under British rule. In 1897 an earthquake destroyed most of the town.
