Shimizu

Seaport city on the coast of Shizuoka prefecture, Japan; population (1998 est) 238,700. The city is a base for deep-sea fishing. The port exports tea, canned and frozen fish, and locally-grown fruit, such as mandarins and strawberries.

Tourists are attracted to the hills of Nihondaira, which afford a spectacular view of Mount Fuji and are covered with tea plantations, as well as the sandspit pine grove known as Miho no Matsubara, which has a similar view of the sacred mountain. South of the city, the Ryugeji temple is a notable landmark.
