Shinnecock Bay

Inlet of the Atlantic Ocean on the South Fork of Long Island, southeastern New York State, to the west of Southampton; length 16 km/10 mi; width 2–6 km/1–4 mi. It is protected by barrier beaches, with an opening to the ocean at Shinnecock Inlet. It joins Great Peconic Bay to the north via the Shinnecock Canal, which is bridged.

Shinnecock Hills (population (1990) 2,800) is a popular resort village between the two bays; the Shinnecock Indian Reservation (population (1990) 400) lies on a peninsula between Southampton and the bay.
