Shiraz

Ancient walled city of southern Iran, the capital of Fars province, on the highway from Tehran to Bushire; population (2006) 1,227,300. Grain, rice, pulses, tobacco, gum tragacanth, clarified butter, wine, wool, skins, and carpets are the main products, as well as cotton goods, glass, attar of roses, and inlaid craftwork. There are many mosques. The tombs of the poets Sa'di and Hafiz are on the outskirts of the city.

A university was established here in 1962.
