Shirley, George (1934– )

US tenor. After private study he sang Rodolfo in Milan, in 1960. He made his New York debut in 1961 at the Metropolitan Opera House, as Ferrando. He sang at Santa Fe in the US first performances of Lulu (as Alwa), Daphne (Apollo), and König Hirsch (Leand), between 1963 and 1965. He appeared at Glyndebourne, as Tamino, Lord Percy, and Idomeneo (1966–74). From 1967 he appeared in London at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Don Ottavio, Pelléas, Loge, and David; he also sang in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Berlin, in 1984.
