Shizuoka

Capital of Shizuoka prefecture, Chubo region, Honshu island, Japan, 150 km/93 mi southwest of Tokyo; population (1998 est) 471,000. Industries include metal and food processing, and the manufacture of paper, plastics, and traditional goods, such as lacquerware, sewing boxes, and geta (wooden clogs). It is the centre of a tea and mandarin orange trade. Other agricultural products include strawberries and wasabi (horseradish). The castle was built in 1589.

Shizuoka is home to the 17th-century Tokugawa-leyasu mausoleum and Shizuoka University (1949).
