Shoemaker, Willie (1931–2003)

US jockey. He rode 8,833 winners from 40,351 mounts. Having first ridden as a professional on 19 March 1949, he retired in February 1990.

He was the leading US jockey ten times. Standing 1.5 m/4 ft 11 in tall, he weighed about 43 kg/95 lb. After his retirement he became a successful trainer until an automobile accident in 1991 left him paralyzed. His career record of 8,833 winners was surpassed on 10 December 1999 by Panamanian-born jockey Laffit Pincay Jr.
