Sholokhov, Mikhail Aleksandrovich (1905–1984)

Russian novelist. His And Quiet Flows the Don (1926–40), hailed in the Soviet Union as a masterpiece of socialist realism, depicts the Don Cossacks through World War I and the Russian Revolution. His authorship of the novel was challenged by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1965.
