The Shootings of the Third of May, 1808 (1814) by Spanish painter Francisco Goya (Prado, Madrid). When Napoleon occupied Spain, Goya's bitter disillusionment with the French Revolution was reflected in such dramatic works as this, which commemorates the execution of a group of Madrid citizens.

Oil painting by Francisco de Goya 1814 (Prado, Madrid), inspired by his outrage at the events of 1808 when the Spanish people courageously rose up against the invading French troops of Napoleon. Goya chose one moment in two violent days – a man facing death at the hands of an execution squad – to encapsulate his emotions about the ruthlessness of power.
