Shoshone

City and administrative headquarters of Lincoln County, southern Idaho, on the Little Wood River, 40 km/25 mi north of Twin Falls; population (1990) 1,200. It is a trade and shipping centre for a sheep raising and agricultural region.

Settled in 1882, it was originally a cattle town. Its development was spurred by an irrigation project in 1907. Idaho's Mammoth Cave is to the north, and the Shoshone Indian Ice Caves are to the northeast.
