show trial

Public and well-reported trial of people accused of crimes against the state. In the USSR in the 1930s and 1940s, Stalin carried out show-trial purges against economic saboteurs, Communist Party members, army officers, and even members of the Bolshevik leadership.

Andrei Vyshinsky was the Soviet prosecutor for many of the most notorious show trials of the 1930s.
