Shriver, (Robert) Sargent, Jr (1915– )

US Democratic politician. He played an important role in the successful presidential campaign of John F Kennedy 1960. He was director of the Peace Corps 1961–66, and director of the Office of Economic Opportunity 1964–68; he also served as special assistant to President Lyndon Johnson 1964–68.

Shriver was born in Westminster, Maryland, and educated at Yale University. Initially a lawyer and journalist, he became general manager of the Chicago Merchandise Mart 1948–60.

He was ambassador to France 1968–70, and was the unsuccessful Democratic vice-presidential candidate in 1972. He remained active in national politics, and was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976.
