Shumsky, Oscar

Shumsky, Oscar (1917–2000)

US violinist and conductor. He made his debut in 1925 with the Philadelphia Orchestra, under Stokowski. He studied with Auer and Zimbalist, and joined the NBC orchestra, under Toscanini, in 1938. After a brief career as a soloist he played with and conducted various chamber groups in Canada and the USA. From 1953 he taught at the Juilliard School, New York. His career as a virtuoso was resumed in the 1980s, to wide acclaim.
