Cheboksary

Capital city and cultural centre of the Chuvash Republic in the west-central Russian Federation, situated on the right bank of the Volga; population (1996 est) 452,000. The city lies 120 km/75 mi west of Kazan, and has textile and timber industries, electrical-engineering and tractor-parts works, and a major hydroelectric power station. It is also a market centre for the agricultural produce of the surrounding region.

Cheboksary was first chronicled in 1469. The city's industrial growth dates from 1939, when a railway spur was built from the main Moscow–Kazan line.
